Urban Sketches
CCU goes to God’s Own Country! “ An exhibition on Urban Sketches was held at Kollam, Kerala from 30th July-28th August, 2016, co-curated by Centre for Contemporary Urbanism and Dr. Manoj Kini in association with Institute of Urban Designers India (IUDI) at Kollam.The venue for the exhibition was the 8-Point Art Cafe and it was be inaugurated by the well known artist and filmaker, Rajiv Anchal on 30 th July at 7:00 p.m. at the conclusion of a music show called ‘Rigged Ragas’.
The exhibition includes sketches made by professionals, students, and other citizens from different parts of Kerala during a Sketching Camp held earlier in the year at Kollam. There is a special collection of sketches of old cities by Manu Mahajan, an urban designer who has been sketching for more than 15 years now. The objective is to use sketching as a tool to understand the historic fabric of cities, and to create awareness about built and natural heritage among people to generate pride for their respective cities.
Kollam or Quilon is a port town with an interesting story. Historically important as a famous port of trade, it was visited by famous travellers like John Mandeville, Ibn Batuta and Marco Polo who have recorded its descriptions in their writings. Kollam is known as the cashew capital of the world. It is one of the least polluted cities in India and has a perfect combination of green and blue – greenery around the backwaters of the Ashtamundi Lake... an amazing place to visit
